Vehicle Body & Driver Protection

Driver protection: All vehicles must have a body, chassis, or combination of structures sufficient to protect the driver from impacts from any direction. The vehicle must provide a physical barrier between the driver and potential contact with another vehicle or the ground.
Side protection: The vehicle structure must protect the driver’s legs, feet, and torso up to at least shoulder level, including the rib cage, from side impacts.
Leg and foot protection: The vehicle must enclose or otherwise secure the driver’s legs and feet so that they cannot extend outside the vehicle during an accident. The structure must also provide protection against frontal impacts.
Non-structural body panels: If the chassis or structural shell provides sufficient protection for the driver, the body panels themselves do not need to be structural. Body materials must be durable and suitable for competition. Cardboard, paper, or materials that become significantly weakened when wet are prohibited. Brittle materials that may shatter or create sharp edges when broken, such as Plexiglas or brittle acrylic panels, are also prohibited.
Body not required: A separate body is not required if the frame or chassis provides adequate protection to prevent the driver’s arms and legs from leaving the vehicle and to prevent parts of another vehicle from entering the driver’s compartment during an accident.
Sharp edges and protrusions: The vehicle must not have sharp edges, corners, or protrusions that could cause injury. Any exposed component that presents a potential hazard must be removed, rounded, blunted, or covered with durable protective padding.
Nose protection: The front of the vehicle must have a minimum radius of 3 inches (6-inch diameter) in at least one direction and must not be dangerously pointed in any other direction.
Floor pan: The vehicle must have a fixed floor pan constructed of solid, rigid material that prevents any part of the driver’s body from contacting the ground.
