The Event Steward shall ensure that all vehicles have sufficient braking power immediately before the start of competition. A brake push test shall be performed on every vehicle once it is positioned on the Starting Grid.
Starting positions shall be determined by one of the following methods, at the discretion of the Event Steward. The method selected should be announced prior to the event so teams can be prepared:
- Random selection by drawing vehicle numbers.
- Order of receipt of entry forms.
- Order of completion of vehicle inspection.
- Order of standing from a previous event or series.
- Practice or qualifying speed. While practice or qualifying speeds may not predict finishing order, placing faster vehicles toward the front can reduce speed differences and create a safer start.
Vehicles shall be positioned on the Starting Grid at a minimum of 8 feet center-to-center. The number of vehicles in each row shall be determined by the width of the track at the starting line. Pole position shall be the front-row position on the inside of the first corner. Successive rows shall line up abreast behind the first row.
If all competitors cannot be safely or fairly accommodated on the Starting Grid, the Event Steward may divide the field into two or more heats. All heats shall be considered part of the same event and shall be scored and awarded together. When dividing the field, the Event Steward should consider apparent or potential speed rather than class or division. Reducing speed differences between vehicles can create safer racing conditions.
