Electrathon America recognizes six competition categories. Each Division and Class competes separately for awards, even when multiple categories compete in the same race.
An event does not need to offer all six categories to be sanctioned. A minimum of three vehicles must compete in a Class for that Class to be recognized for awards.

HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION #
Teams with vehicles owned by a high school or built by high school-age students under instructor supervision, with student drivers and crew.
OPEN DIVISION #
Teams with vehicles owned or operated by individuals, colleges, universities, clubs, or corporate teams. Drivers and crew may be any age.
STANDARD CLASS #
The Standard Class uses lead-acid batteries and provides a lower-cost option consistent with the spirit of Electrathon competition. It represents the type of vehicle traditionally built for the sport.
ADVANCED BATTERY CLASS #
The Advanced Battery Class encourages experimentation with newer battery technologies offering higher energy density than lead-acid batteries.
SOLAR CLASS #
The Solar Class permits photovoltaic cells to provide additional energy during a race.
RACE FORMAT #
The Race Steward may divide competitors into multiple races or heats when necessary for safety. Divisions and Classes may be used to organize heats, but competitors may also be grouped by potential or demonstrated speed.
ADDITIONAL CATEGORIES #
Event organizers may create additional categories to accommodate local participants or promote equitable competition. Additional categories may not be created to favor specific teams or vehicles.
Additional categories and their requirements must be identified on the Event Sanctioning Form. Examples include Kit Car, Novice, or combinations of Experimental Classes.
